Xi’an Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources was founded in 1962, and was renamed Xi’an Center of Geological Survey, CGS and also reserved the previous name with the official approval of China Organization Committee in 2006.

Xi’an Center of Geological Survey, CGS is a State-owned geological institute, and is led directly by China Geological Survey, the Ministry of Land and Resources P.R.C. It undertakes all the geological survey and related comprehensive research projects in northwest China; takes charge of collection, management and public service of data from state-sponsored geological projects in northwest China; takes responsible for project management of national geological survey in northwest China; bears responsible for project supervision of China geological survey foundation projects commissioned by China Geological Survey; and sets up the two organizations for public services ---“Mineral Resources Supervision and Test Center in Northwest China, the Ministry of Land and Resources P.R.C”, and the “Northwest Geology Data Library, CGS”.

Xi’an Center of Geological Survey, CGS includes three parts: the first is 8 management departments, such as administration, general accounting, personnel department, party committee, chief engineers office, management system office, management of project supervision, and project supervision of CGS foundation; the second is also 8 departments of geology & technology , such as department of science & technology cooperation, department of basic geology, department of mineral resources, department of energy geology, department of hydrology & environmental geology, department of engineering technology, experimental test center, and GIS & making-printing center; and the third is 7 departments for comprehensive service, such as department of information and documents, Northwest Geology editorial dept, environment evaluation & governance research center, oil & gas exploration center, Xi’an Zhongdi Engineering Investigation Co. Ltd, property management, retiree management, and Xi’an Dikuang Hotel.

There are more than 300 employees with 260 geologists and engineers in fixed post, of whom, 36 persons with doctoral degree, 63 persons with master degree, and 102 persons with bachelor degree, include 102 senior engineers (36 research fellows and professor engineers) and 73 middle-leveled researchers. Moreover, there are more than 200 employees in unfixed post, served the geological survey and scientific research in our center.
It has advantages in the fields of basic geology survey, energy and mineral resources investigation, hydrological geology and environmental geology and hazardous geology survey, application of engineering technology, geological science research and so on.

It hold 16 Class-A certifications, such as qualifications in regional geological survey, solid mineral exploration, liquid mineral exploration, hydrological geology, engineering geology, environmental geology survey, geophysical exploration, remote sensing geological survey, rock and mineral identification, rock and mineral analysis, authorized by the Ministry of Land and Resources P.R.C; qualifications in geological hazard risk evaluation and geological hazard treatment investigation of state-run construction project; qualifications in evaluation on environmental impact of state-run construction project, authorized by the Ministry of Environmental Protection P.R.C; qualifications in water resources assessment of state-run construction project , authorized by the Ministry of Water Resources P.R.C. Moreover, the Center of Experiment and Analysis has got approval of national certification and Accreditation for laboratory and the measurement authentication. In 2006, the integrated management system has been established and recognized, in accordance with GB/T19001-2000 idt ISO9001-2000 “Requirements of Quality Management System”, GB/T24001-2004 idt ISO14001-2004, “Regulations and Application Guidance of Environmental Management System”, GB/T28001-2001 idt OHSAS18001-2001 “Management System Regulations of Professional Health and Safety”.

It publishes the core journal “Northwest Geology” quarterly, and maintains the professional website of Northwest Geological Survey www.xian.cgs.gov.cn.
It has collaborated with Chang′an University and Shaanxi Meteorological Bureau on establishment of the ministry-owned key lab and open lab; Ph.D and Master's programs operated jointly with Northwest University, China University of Geosciences (Beijing) and Chang’an University; set up postdoctoral working station; Project cooperation with International Atomic Energy Agency, France, Britain, Australia, Kirghizia and the central Asian countries, as well as some international organizations; established good cooperative relationships with US, Italy, Japan and Russia and so on.
In the nearly 40 years, It has completed more than 600 state and local projects of geological survey and science research, gained 118 awards from various level governments. In the institute, 2 people obtained Li Siguang Prize and Hou Defen Prize, 20 people have government special subsidies, and 2 people gained the title of outstanding contribution expert in Shaanxi province. Since 2001, Xi’an Center of Geological Survey has been recognized as an outstanding institute by China Geological Survey for 7 years. Moreover, it was awarded “Civilization Unit” by Shaanxi Provincial Government in 2005, “outstanding basic party organization” by Shaanxi Party Committee in 2006, “advanced institute of democratic management” by Shaanxi Science and Technology Committee in 2007, “model home of workers” by China Committee of Science & Education & Culture & Health & Gym in 2007.
